The Best Time of Year to Buy a Used Car in Las Vegas

Las Vegas runs on its own calendar: tourist seasons, convention weeks, a summer that melts batteries, and a tax-refund rush every spring. The used car market follows that calendar too. Here is what changes month by month, from a dealer that has watched it for 25 years.

January and February: quiet lots, more attention

After the holidays, fewer people are shopping. Lots are calmer, salespeople have more time for you, and there is less competition for the car you want. A good time to take your time.

February to April: tax refund season

This is the busiest stretch of the year for used cars. Refunds turn into down payments, and the most affordable cars, the ones under $10,000, sell fastest. If you are using your refund, apply early and shop the week the money lands, before the best cars are gone.

May and June: before the heat

A smart window. Get your car sorted before summer, test the air conditioning while it still matters, and give yourself time to replace tires or a battery if needed. See buying a car that can handle Las Vegas heat.

July and August: the heat test

The hottest months are when weak cars show themselves: overheating, failing A/C, dead batteries. That is bad news for whoever owns them and good news for you as a buyer, because a test drive in 110 degrees tells you the truth. Drive with the A/C on high and watch the temperature gauge.

September and October: the fall reset

Summer is over, families have finished back-to-school spending, and dealers restock for the end of the year. Good selection, steadier prices.

November and December: year-end

Dealers want to move inventory before the year closes, and holiday weekends often bring specials. Selection can thin out as the month goes on, so if you see the right car, don't wait for December 31.

Best day of the week?

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are quietest. Saturdays are busiest. If you can only come on a weekend, call ahead and we will have the car you want pulled up front.

The honest answer

The best time to buy is when you find the right car at the right total price, and you have your paperwork ready. Timing helps, but a well-inspected car with an honest out-the-door number beats a "seasonal deal" every time. Learn to check that number in how to figure out the out-the-door price.
