How to Figure Out the Out-the-Door Price on a Used Car in Las Vegas
The out-the-door price is the only number that matters: the total you actually pay to drive the car home, with every fee and tax included. It is also the number most car ads leave out.
Here is how to work it out yourself in about two minutes, before you ever set foot on a lot.
The formula
Out-the-door price = vehicle price + dealer fees + sales tax + registration and title costs − your trade-in.
Every piece of that is knowable in advance. Let's take them one at a time.
1. The vehicle price
This is the advertised number, but check what it includes. Some dealers advertise a price that already has their fees folded in. Others advertise the vehicle alone and add fees later. Some advertise a price that only applies if you finance with them. Read the fine print, or ask: "Is this the price for anyone, paying any way?"
2. Dealer fees
Dealers in Nevada set their own documentation fee, so it varies from lot to lot. It is the biggest number that changes between dealers, which makes it worth asking about up front.
Ours are published on every car: a $695.00 documentation fee, a $28.25 title fee and a $29.00 smog fee, $752.25 in total. More on what each one is in dealer fees in Nevada, explained.
3. Sales tax
In Clark County the sales tax rate is 8.375%. In Nevada, if you trade in a car, tax is generally charged on the price after your trade-in value is subtracted, which can save you real money. Confirm the exact amount on your paperwork, because the taxable total depends on how the deal is written.
4. Registration, plates and government fees
These are set by the state, not the dealer, and depend on the vehicle's value and age. Nevada's governmental services tax is part of registration and is usually highest on newer, more expensive cars. A dealer cannot discount these. If you are transferring plates from a car you sold, ask about that too.
A worked example
Say you find a car advertised at $10,999 and you have no trade-in:
- Vehicle price: $10,999.00
- Dealer fees: $752.25
- Sales tax (8.375% of the taxable amount): roughly $920 to $985, depending on which charges are taxed
- Registration and plates: varies by car, often a few hundred dollars
Rough out-the-door: about $13,000, not $10,999. That gap is why comparing advertised prices between dealers can mislead you.
This example is an estimate for illustration. Your actual taxes and registration depend on the vehicle, your trade-in and where you live.
Three questions that get you the real number
- "What is the out-the-door price on this exact car, in writing?"
- "Is anything on the paperwork that isn't on that number: add-ons, protection packages, accessories?"
- "Is that price the same if I pay cash or bring my own financing?"
A dealer who answers those quickly and in writing is a dealer worth your time. One who changes the subject to the monthly payment is worth a second look somewhere else.
What about the monthly payment?
A payment can be made to look small by stretching the loan longer. Always start from the out-the-door total, then look at the payment, the number of months and the total you will repay. If you are financing, see how much down payment you need.
