Half-ton, three-quarter-ton or midsize?

• Midsize (Nissan Frontier and similar): easier to park and lighter on gas. Enough for weekend projects and light towing.
• Half-ton (Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and similar): the all-rounder. Daily driver during the week, hauls and tows on the weekend.
• Three-quarter-ton (Ford F-250 Super Duty and similar): for heavy trailers, a camper, or a truck bed that is loaded every day for work.

Cab style matters too. A regular or extended cab (Super Cab, King Cab) gives you a longer bed. A crew cab (SuperCrew, Crew Cab) seats five adults comfortably.

What to check on a used truck

• Towing history. Look at the hitch, and ask whether it towed. A worn hitch receiver says more than the odometer.
• The bed. Dents and scratches are normal; rust holes or a bent floor are not.
• Cooling system and transmission. Towing in Las Vegas summer heat is hard on both. A test drive on the freeway tells you a lot.
• Tires and battery. Desert heat ages both quickly.
