How Much Down Payment Do You Need for a Used Car in Las Vegas?

It is the question everyone asks first, and the one every dealership answers with “it depends.” That answer is annoying but it is also true — so here is what it actually depends on, and how to figure out your own number before you walk in.

Why nobody can quote you a figure over the phone

Your down payment is not set by the dealership. It is set by whichever lender approves you, and they decide based on three things: the vehicle, your credit profile, and your income.

The same buyer can need very different amounts down on two different cars on the same lot. An older, higher-mileage vehicle often needs more down, not less, because lenders limit how much they will finance against a car that will depreciate quickly.

What actually moves the number

The car itself

Age, mileage and book value. Lenders cap what they will lend against a vehicle, and the gap between that cap and the price is your down payment. This is why the cheapest car on the lot is not always the one with the smallest amount down.

Your credit profile

Stronger credit generally means less required down. A bankruptcy, collections or a past repossession usually means more. Not always — which lender sees your application matters as much as the file itself.

Documented income

This is the one most people underestimate. Steady, provable income can reduce what a lender wants up front. If you are self-employed or drive rideshare, bank statements do this job — see what to bring.

Your trade-in

Equity in your current car counts toward the down payment. If you owe less than it is worth, that difference is real money toward the new one. Get a number on the trade page.

How to find your number in one afternoon

Do it in this order and you will not waste a Saturday:

  • Apply first, shop second. Get the application in before you fall in love with a car. It takes a few minutes.
  • Get your trade appraised at the same time, so you know what equity you are working with.
  • Then look at vehicles knowing your real range instead of guessing.

Doing it backwards — picking the car first, then finding out what is required — is how people end up disappointed.

A word on “zero down”

Advertised zero-down offers usually depend on strong credit, and many used-car shoppers do not qualify for them. If a lot leads with it and will not give you an out-the-door number, be careful. We would rather give you a real figure once a lender has seen your application than get you in the door with one that changes.

How our prices work

Separate from the down payment: the price on every listing is the vehicle price before dealer fees. Our dealer fees ($752.25 in total) are itemized separately on every vehicle, and tax, license and registration are additional and vary. More in what dealer fees actually cost.
