Rent to Own Cars in Las Vegas: How It Works and What to Ask
If your credit is rough and you need a car this week, "rent to own" can sound like the easiest door to walk through. Sometimes it is the right call. More often there is a better option, and it pays to know the difference before you sign anything.
We are a used car dealer in Las Vegas, not a rent-to-own lot, so we will be straight with you: here is how rent to own works, what it really costs, and what else is worth checking first.
How rent to own works
With rent to own, you make weekly or biweekly payments to drive the car. The lot keeps the title until you have made every payment, and only then does the car become yours. Many agreements need little or no credit check and a small amount upfront, which is why they appeal to people who have been turned down elsewhere.
The catch is in the details. Because you are renting until the last payment, missing one can mean losing the car and everything you have paid toward it.
What rent to own really costs
Look past the weekly number. Multiply the payment by the number of weeks and compare the total to what the same car sells for. That gap is your real cost. Ask too about:
- Who pays for repairs while you are renting.
- What happens if you are late, and how fast the car can be taken back.
- Whether your payments are reported to the credit bureaus. If they are not, a year of on-time payments does nothing to rebuild your credit.
- GPS trackers or starter-interrupt devices on the car.
- Insurance requirements, which you usually pay on top.
Get every number in writing before you sign. A good lot answers all of these without hesitating.
Rent to own vs. financing through a dealer
With dealer financing, a lender pays for the car and you own it from day one, with the lender listed on the title until the loan is paid. Most auto lenders report your payments to the credit bureaus, so paying on time can help rebuild your credit. Rates for challenged credit are higher than for good credit, but the total cost is often lower than renting to own the same car.
Many people who think rent to own is their only option can actually get financed. At Charlie Cheap Car we send your application to several lenders instead of one, including lenders who work with bad credit, no credit, past repossessions, ITIN and self-employed or cash income. That gives you more than one chance at an approval. Financing is subject to lender approval.
When rent to own might make sense
- You need a car for a short time and do not plan to keep it.
- You have been turned down by several lenders, including ones that work with bad credit.
- You understand the total cost and the repossession terms, and you are comfortable with them.
