How sales tax on a car works in Las Vegas

When you buy from a dealer in Clark County, the dealer collects sales tax at 8.375% and sends it to the state. A trade-in helps twice: it lowers what you owe on the car, and tax is generally charged on the price after your trade-in comes off. On a $5,000 trade-in, that is about $419 you do not pay in tax.

Buying from a private seller is different. The Nevada DMV says private party sales, family sales and gifts are not subject to sales tax. That is a real saving, but it comes without a dealer behind the car. Read what to check when you buy from a private seller.

A worked example

A car advertised at $10,999 with our $752.25 in dealer fees and no trade-in comes to about $921 to $984 in sales tax, for a total near $12,700 before registration. That gap is why comparing advertised prices between dealers can mislead you. For the whole formula, read how to figure out the out-the-door price and what dealer fees in Nevada really are.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Registration and plates. Set by the state, and higher on newer, more expensive cars. The DMV explains the fees.
  • A smog check, where the car needs one.
  • Optional products, such as a service contract, if you choose to add one.
  • Your payment. It depends on the lender and is not something a tax calculator can tell you.

Common questions

What is the sales tax on a car in Las Vegas?
Clark County's combined sales tax rate is 8.375%, and it applies when you buy from a dealer.
Does a trade-in lower the sales tax in Nevada?
Yes. When you buy from a dealer, tax is generally charged on the price after your trade-in value is subtracted, so a trade-in saves you the tax on that amount as well.
Do I pay sales tax if I buy from a private seller in Nevada?
According to the Nevada DMV, private party sales, family sales and gifts are not subject to sales tax. Registration fees still apply.
Are dealer fees taxed?
It depends on the charge and how the deal is written, which is why this calculator shows a range. The low number taxes the car alone and the high number taxes the dealer fees too. Your buyer’s order shows the exact amount.
How much is registration on a used car in Las Vegas?
It is set by the DMV and depends on the car. Registration is a flat fee plus the governmental services tax, which is based on the original sticker price and goes down as the car ages, so a newer, more expensive car costs more to register. The DMV has an online fee estimate that uses your VIN.
Is the sales tax the same everywhere in Nevada?
No, rates differ by county. If your purchase will be taxed in another county, type that county’s rate into the calculator.
