Which F-150 generation?
- 2004 to 2008: the most affordable way into an F-150. Most have the 4.6-liter or 5.4-liter V8. The 2004 "Heritage" is the older body style Ford kept selling alongside the new one that year.
- 2009 to 2014: a stronger frame and, from 2011, a new lineup of engines: the 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter "Coyote" V8, the 6.2-liter V8 and the first 3.5-liter EcoBoost.
- 2015 to 2020: the aluminum-alloy body, several hundred pounds lighter than the steel one before it, and it will not rust the way steel does. Engines include the 2.7 and 3.5 EcoBoost, the 5.0 V8 and, from 2018, the 3.3-liter V6. A ten-speed automatic arrived with the 2017 3.5 EcoBoost and spread to most engines from 2018.
- 2021 and newer: a modern cabin with bigger screens, and the PowerBoost hybrid with an onboard generator on some trucks, handy on a job site or a camping trip.
Cab, bed and trim
- Regular Cab: two doors and up to three seats. A pure work truck.
- SuperCab: small rear-hinged back doors and a back seat for short trips or tools out of the weather.
- SuperCrew: four full doors and a back seat adults are happy in. The family choice, and the most common one.
- Beds come in 5.5, 6.5 and 8 feet. A 5.5-foot bed fits most garages and parking spaces; an 8-foot bed carries a sheet of plywood flat.
- Trims, roughly from basic to luxurious: XL (work truck), STX, XLT (the most popular), Lariat (leather), King Ranch, Platinum and Limited. An FX4 package adds off-road hardware; the Raptor is its own high-speed desert truck.
Which engine?
- 5.0-liter V8: simple, proven and sounds the part. A good all-rounder for towing and daily driving.
- 2.7 and 3.5 EcoBoost: twin-turbo V6s with a lot of pulling power for their size. The 3.5 is the choice for heavy trailers. Fuel economy depends a lot on how hard you drive.
- 3.3 or 3.7-liter V6: fine for work around town and light loads, and usually the cheapest to buy.
What to check on a used F-150
- A cold start. On a 2004 to 2010 5.4 V8, a ticking or knocking at idle can mean timing and cam phaser parts. On a 2011 to 2017 EcoBoost, a short rattle right after a cold start is worth asking about.
- The transmission. On the test drive, shifts should be smooth and predictable. On a ten-speed, ask whether its software updates have been done.
- Towing wear. Look at the hitch receiver, the wiring plug and the rear springs. A worn hitch says more than the odometer.
- The bed and the frame. Dents in the bed are normal; a bent bed floor, frame damage or welding underneath are not.
- Body repairs. Aluminum panels from 2015 on cost more to repair, so look closely for mismatched paint or panel gaps.
- The ratings. Towing and payload ratings vary a lot by engine, cab and axle. The sticker on the driver's door jamb shows what that exact truck can carry.
- Open recalls. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Recall repairs are free at any Ford dealer.
Buying an F-150 for work
If you are self-employed or paid on a 1099, lenders usually ask for bank statements or tax returns instead of pay stubs. See what to bring to get approved. Comparing other trucks? See all our used trucks and every used Ford on the lot.
How pricing works here
Every truck shows the vehicle price with our dealer fees listed under it: $752.25 in total for documentation, title and smog. Tax, license and registration are extra.
