Which Jeep fits you

• Wrangler: the off-roader, with solid axles, a removable top and doors that come off. The two-door is shorter and nimbler on a trail; the four-door Unlimited has a usable back seat and more cargo room for everyday driving. Wranglers from 2012 on have the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, and the newer generation from 2018 also offers a turbocharged four-cylinder.
• Grand Cherokee: the comfortable Jeep. A midsize SUV that rides like a car on the freeway, with a V6 or a V8 and two- or four-wheel drive.
• Cherokee, Compass, Renegade and Patriot: smaller Jeeps that are easier on gas and easier to park. Four-wheel-drive versions, especially the Trailhawk models, handle dirt roads well.

What to check on a used Jeep

• Look underneath. Scrapes on the skid plates are normal for a Jeep that has seen a trail. Bent steering parts, damaged frame rails or a leaking axle are not.
• The steering at speed. On a Wrangler, a violent shake in the steering wheel after a bump at freeway speed (Jeep owners call it "death wobble") points to worn steering or suspension parts. Lifted Jeeps are more prone to it.
• Lifts and big tires. A modified Jeep can be a great buy, but ask what was done and by whom. Bigger tires without re-geared axles make the engine and transmission work harder.
• Four-wheel drive. Make sure it shifts into and out of 4-High and 4-Low without grinding.
• The top and seals. Desert sun is hard on soft tops, plastic windows and door seals. Check the windows for clouding and the seals for cracks.
• Open recalls. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Recall repairs are free at any Jeep dealer.

Heat and the trail
